PITTSBURGH — The final phase of a major road project in the South Hills begins on Monday.
Crews have been replacing water mains along Becks Run Road, bordering Baldwin and the City of Pittsburgh, as part of a $37 million project. Work began in June 2024.
The next step in the project will mean new traffic patterns for drivers.
Starting Monday, drivers heading north on Becks Run will be detoured onto Wagner Street.
Pennsylvania American Water said it expects most drivers to be able to access all residences and businesses in the area while work is completed.
“This project was significant in scope, yet vital to the 137,000 residents served by the Hays Mine Treatment Plant,” said Project Manager Morgan Castle. “We have been mindful of the residents, businesses, buses and emergency vehicles and have committed to accommodating them during construction.”
Ron Druga lives right on Becks Run Road, about a half mile from East Carson, and for last several months, he’s watched crews tear up the road to replace the 100 year old water mains underneath of it.
“They probably messed some of them taking them up, but they needed replaced. It was over 100 years old the pipes,” he said.
The lines being worked on run from the Mon River to the Hays Mine Treatment Plant. So far, Penn American Water has installed nearly three miles of new water mains.
For business owner, Jeffrey McFall, he’s worried the road latest closure is going to severely impact his car wash.
“I depend fully on foot traffic... and the people coming by and driving by. Right now, we have no business,” McFall told Channel 11.
The project is expected to be completed in June.
