Upper Saint Clair police were first to arrive on the scene.
“There was a woman who was outside of the house, they did make entry – our officers made entry to the house,” said Chief Jonathan Wharton of the Upper St. Clair Police Department.
That’s when police pulled a man to safety and attempted to rescue another person inside, as the intensity of the flames caused part of the home to cave in.
“Once it collapsed, that’s what created the smoke and the big ball of fire,” said Chief Ted Hale of the Upper St. Clair Fire Department
The person trapped inside the house was killed, and the man and woman who got out were taken to the hospital, along with the two police officers who bravely ran inside.
The Upper St. Clair Police Department said the officers were treated for smoke inhalation and have since been released and are recovering.
Firefighters remained at the bitterly cold scene for hours, and investigators worked to piece together where the fire started and what could have caused it, as neighbors looked on in disbelief.
“I think when it happens in your own neighborhood, it really brings you closer to the reality of this,” said Jason Daugherty, who lives down the street.
