Crews battle house fire in McKees Rocks

PITTSBURGH — A fire tore through a McKees Rocks home early Monday morning.

An Allegheny County 911 dispatcher said the call came in around 3:30 a.m. for a reported structure fire in the 700 block of Harriet Street.

Heavy smoke and fire shot from the roof of the two-story home when our crews were on scene. Neighbors woke up and looked on, waiting to see if they would be evacuated.

“At about 4 o’clock this morning, my son came down the stairs and said, ‘there’s a fire on the street and they want us to get dressed in case we have to be evacuated,” Bill Dunmire said.

Those evacuations were never ordered. Firefighters were able to keep the intense flames from spreading from house to house.

That’s one of the things Dunmire said he’s grateful for, along with the heads up from crews on scene.

“I was kid of surprised at that. I really was because, let’s face it, it’s McKees Rocks, there’s a lot of stuff here that shouldn’t be here.”

It’s unclear if anyone lives in the home that caught fire, or if anyone was inside when the flames broke out.

The Allegheny County Fire Marshal is investigating.
