1 hospitalized after cleaning chemicals mixed inside South Side sushi bar

PITTSBURGH — Hazmat units were called to a sushi bar on Pittsburgh’s South Side after cleaning chemicals were mixed, causing several people to feel ill inside the building.

Emergency crews responded to the Kura Revolving Sushi Bar on Cinema Drive in the South Side Works around 1 p.m.

A Pittsburgh Public Safety official said employees told first responders two cleaning chemicals had been mixed together, possibly creating chlorine gas.

Medics evaluated 15 people at the scene and no one was hurt. The man who mixed the chemicals was taken to a hospital with “minor symptoms,” per public safety. He’s in stable condition.

The chemicals have been safely disposed of and the building ventilated.
