Brentwood neighbors upset over sidewalk parking ban on narrow road

BRENTWOOD, Pa. — Neighbors along Churchview Avenue in Brentwood tell Channel 11 they have had enough.

The road is narrow. Many of them have had their parked cars hit. Now, they say they have no way to protect them.

“If we park in the street, our cars have been hit. I’ve lost several cars over the years and I’ve seen people get killed on this street,” Colleen Toal said. She’s lived there for more than four decades.

“If you get out of your car, people are swearing at you just to get out of your car in front of your own house,” she said.

To protect their cars, many neighbors started parking on the sidewalk.

“We Have to park with two tires on the sidewalk just for us to be able to safely get out of our cars,” Toal said.

Now, it’s not allowed. Brentwood’s police chief tells Channel 11 people had complained about the sidewalks being blocked for wheelchairs and strollers. So, council passed and ordinance that said two tires equals a citation.

Colleen Toal was ticketed earlier this week. Another neighbor, Ed Covert, has a hearing later this month.

“I think it’s ridiculous, especially when there is a clear, open sidewalk across the street,” Covert said.

More than half a dozen neighbors met with Channel 11. They tell us they want change and plan to go to borough council as a group.

“We just want them to work with us. Just don’t give us a ticket and that’s too bad,” Toal said.

Brentwood’s police chief also told Channel 11 he plans to ask council for a study to be done on Churchview Ave. and hopes it will help the issue.
