President Joe Biden has signed a bipartisan bill intended to help schools respond to cardiac emergencies into law.
McKees Rocks native and Buffalo Bills safety Damar Hamlin, who suffered a cardiac arrest during a Monday Night Football game in January 2023, advocated for the Cardiomyopathy Health Education, Awareness, Research and Training in Schools Act, also known as the HEARTS Act, and worked on it with Sen. Chuck Schumer. The NFL’s Smart Hearts Coalition and American Heart Association also supported the bill.
The legislation passed in the House of Representatives in September and passed in the Senate earlier in December. President Joe Biden signed it into law on Monday.

The HEARTS Act established a federal grant program to provide AEDs and CPR training to schools and childcare centers.
