BEAVER COUNTY, Pa. — In Conway on Monday afternoon, residents across the area were dealing with problems with their electricity.
“No TV and I can’t warm up any coffee. Saturday, we lost power at 1 and we got the power on at 5:30 p.m. Yesterday, we lost power at 8:30 and we still don’t have any power,” said Dave Masumoto.
The Marathon gas station along Route 65 was dark and empty. The post office hung signs in the window saying “no power” and the hum of generators can be heard streets away.
“That thing is so loud and then you got to drag it in and out every day. In fact, we had to go buy more power strips today because the fridge and freezer are starting to melt, and I just went grocery shopping,” said Kandy Milliken Conner.
Milliken Conner went to Lowes on Sunday night after going several hours without power and spent hundreds of dollars to get a generator for her house. She wasn’t alone. A number of people along her street did the same as they all wait for Duquesne Light to get everything back up and running.
“Instead of using the electric clippers, I’m out here with hand clippers, and Saturday I couldn’t even see Third Avenue, which is the next street down,” Masumoto said.
While this area just lost some shingles and siding, just up the street in Freedom, the damage was clearer. Several trees were uprooted around the high school with power poles snapped and wires tangled. The lack of electricity forced Freedom School District to close for the day.
Duquesne Light is hopeful to have power restored to most people by 8 p.m. Monday, but for harder hit areas like Ambridge, Harmony and Economy it could be until 10 p.m. Tuesday night.
