The Allegheny County Department of Public Works expects up to two inches of snow to fall between 6 a.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday. Since the heaviest snow is expected during the morning commute, officials urge drivers to leave their homes earlier than usual, slow down and allow for extra space between vehicles. Drivers should stay at least six car lengths behind salt trucks.

When snow starts falling overnight, 27 salt trucks installed with plows will be deployed on county-owned roads, then replaced by 24 new drivers on Thursday afternoon. Drivers will stay on the roads until they’re all clear of snow. The number of trucks deployed will be adjusted as needed.

It takes drivers between one and two hours to complete their routes, then another hour to return to a maintenance garage, load with salt, and start their route again. It could take longer than normal during commute hours, meaning there could be light accumulation and slick spots during the morning rush.

With ongoing near single-digit wind chills, the salt used on roadways is being treated with liquid calcium chloride.
