Stephen Shanley, the Allegheny County Department of Public Works director, anticipates snow will start falling between 10 p.m. Sunday and 1 a.m. Monday, with total accumulations expected to be between three and six inches. Higher amounts of snow are predicted in the southern parts of the county.

Shanley notes that accumulation totals “appear to be difficult to predict with this storm” but assures that crews are prepared to clear and salt county-maintained roads no matter how much snow falls — whether it be two inches or a foot, as some models predict.
As soon as snow starts falling, Shanley says all 28 salt trucks installed with ploys will be deployed. They’ll stay on their routes until the snow stops and all county-maintained roads are clear, although the number of trucks deployed may be adjusted as needed.
While deployed, it takes drivers one to two hours to complete their routes, then another hour to return to the nearest maintenance garage, reload with salt, and restart the routes. That process could take longer when additional vehicles are on the road. So, Shanely warns there may be some snow accumulation on roadways during morning rush hour on Monday.

Anyone driving during the snowfall is urged to give themselves extra time, slow down and provide extra space between vehicles around them.
