YORK, Pa. (AP) — Several people were hurt and a police officer was killed in a shooting at a UPMC hospital in Central Pennsylvania on Saturday.
NBC News affiliate WGAL reports police responded to the incident at UPMC Memorial Hospital in York County on Saturday morning.
A UPMC spokesperson confirmed to Channel 11 reports of a gunman at the hospital, and shots fired.
York County District Attorney Tim Barker said the incident happened between 10:35 and 11:13 a.m.
The gunman, identified as Diogenes Archangel Ortiz, 49, entered the building with a bag containing a handgun and zip ties.
Ortiz went to the ICU where he took members of the UPMC staff hostage.
Barker said three members of the staff were shot, including a doctor, a nurse and a custodian. All three of them are in stable condition at this time.
UPMC officers who quickly responded to the situation were shot at, which prompted a larger response from other law enforcement agencies.
A shootout occurred between officers and Ortiz. Ortiz was shot and killed.
The Associated Press reports an officer with the West York Borough Police Department was also shot and killed.
The Fraternal Order of Police has identified the officer who was killed as West York Borough Police Officer Andrew Duarte.
“Pennsylvania lost another hero today. Officer Duarte’s bravery and commitment to upholding the law are a testament to the selflessness shown daily by those who have dedicated themselves to protecting and serving. Our deepest condolences go out to his loved ones during this difficult time. We stand together with the West York Borough Police Department in honoring Officer Duarte’s sacrifice,” the fraternity said in a statement.
According to a spokesperson from PennWest California, Duarte graduated from CalU in 2016 in criminal justice.
“We mourn the loss of Andrew Duarte, who was a valued member of our PennWest California alumni family. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, and we join them in remembering his dedication and service,” a spokesperson from Pennsylvania Western University said.
Barker said two other police officers were shot and injured. They are both in stable condition.
