3-year-old left unattended in Jefferson Hills motel room hit by car; mother arrested, police say

A 3-year-old was hit by a vehicle after being left unattended in a Jefferson Hills motel room.

Jefferson Hills police say Shawnae Galberth left her 3-year-old and a 2-year-old unattended in a room on Saturday evening at the Econo Lodge on Route 51.

The children got out of the room and walked along Route 51, where the 2-year-old was hit by a vehicle, according to police. The driver remained on scene and is cooperating with police.

The toddler was taken to a local hospital in critical condition. Jefferson Hills police tell Channel 11 the child is expected to survive.

Galberth was arrested and charged with two counts of felony endangering the welfare of children. She was taken to the Allegheny County Jail.

People who live and shop in the area were outraged this happened and said they agree with Galberth facing charges.

“One-hundred percent, yeah, child endangerment. Why aren’t you paying attention to your kids?” said Mikayla Gouker of Clairton. “This road is too dangerous….no lights. The speed limit is 40, people go 80 on it.”

Galberth faces two counts of endangering the welfare of children.
