Two deer in Pennsylvania have tested positive for Chronic Wasting Disease.
The Pennsylvania Game Commission said these newly detected cases were detected in Luzerne County.
The deer were both adult males. One was found by a hunter and the other was in a captive facility.
The farm where the captive deer was being held has been put on quarantine to prevent any further spread throughout the state.
CWD is a threat to deer and elk. It’s classified as a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy (TSE) and is similar to scrapie in sheep, mad cow disease in cattle and Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease in humans, the Game Commission said. It is spread through direct animal-to-animal contact or through contaminated environments.
The Game Commission said it will introduce Disease Management Area changes in the spring in Luzerne County.
Anyone with further concerns about CWD is asked to contact the Game Commission’s CWD Hotline at 1-833-INFOCWD, email INFOCWD@pa.gov or visit www.arcg.is/1G4TLr for more information.
