9 outstanding Black women honored during ‘Sisters Saving Ourselves Now’ leadership luncheon

PITTSBURGH — Nine outstanding Black women and two teens were recognized during Sister Saving Ourselves Now’s 2nd annual Community Leadership Awards Luncheon.

It took place at The Lemont on Mount Washington Sunday evening.

The organization said awards are given to individuals and organizations who have demonstrated excellence and the highest standards of civic and social responsibility. Here who was honored during the Red Carpet event:

  • Maryn Formley, Founder and CEO of Voter Empowerment Education and Enrichment Movement (VEEM)
  • Joan Mitchell, President of Kappa Chapter of Chi ETA Phi Sorority
  • Jada Shirriel, CEO of Healthy Start, Inc.
  • Brenda Tate, President of BT Community Consultant, Inc.
  • Ola Jackson, Founder of the Onyx Woman’s Network
  • Honorable Kimberly Clark, President Judge 5th Judicial District of Pennsylvania
  • Monifa Martin, Technology Consultant at Community College of Allegheny County
  • Dr. Kathi Elliot, CEO of Gwen’s Girls
  • Fonda Duse’, Director of Equity and Inclusion at Pittsburgh Regional Transit

Youth awards went to Kenian Williams and Madina Mada, both student leaders at Perry Traditional Academy.

“We know that the work that they’re doing is not celebrated, so we want to come together today to celebrate them so they know that we recognize who they are and we recognize the work they do,” said Rev. Dr. Judith More, founder of Sisters Saving Ourselves Now.

Sisters Saving Ourselves Now is dedicated to actionable steps facing women of all colors with a specific focus on underserved women. The organization’s objective is to convene other like-minded organizations that have a passion and a willingness to collectively participate in eliminating the challenges women of all colors and underserved face.
