Snow in May? Snow way!

PITTSBURGH — Many of you will see snow flurries and snow showers from time to time into the middle of the week as some unseasonably cold spring air drives into the region.  Tuesday’s forecasted high temperature of 44 degrees would break the record 47 degrees (1897) for the coldest high temperature ever recorded in Pittsburgh on May 2.

While snow is a bit unusual for our area in May, it is not completely unheard of for us. As a matter of fact, we generally see some flakes and flurries in May once every six years. Over the course of the last seven years, it has snowed five times in Pittsburgh with the latest being May 18, 2017.

By the way, the most snow we’ve seen in a single day in May was May 9, 1966, when we picked up 3.3 inches of snow.
