‘This is where I wanted to be:’ Steelers QB Mitch Trubisky looking forward to playing in Pittsburgh

PITTSBURGH — The Steelers made it official on Thursday with the announcement of the signing of free-agent quarterback Mitch Trubisky.

The new contract is a two-year deal for a reported $14.25 million.

It has yet to be seen whether Trubisky will be the long-term solution as Steelers QB, but he’s clearly an intriguing option for the short-term.

Trubisky immediately enters the battle for the starting job with Mason Rudolph. Dwayne Haskins, who signed his restricted free agent tender for $2.54 million, gives the Steelers two former first-round picks in their quarterback room.

In his introductory news conference with the Pittsburgh media, Trubisky says he welcomes the competition, “I’m in a situation where I have to prove myself back on the field.” Despite only being 27, Trubisky brings with him a wealth of experience.

In his first five NFL seasons, Trubisky has started 50 regular-season games, and the Bears made the playoffs in two of his four seasons as their starting QB. That said, Trubisky’s time in Chicago was challenging, and he’s excited for a new situation, with a perennial winner, and a respected head coach.

“They didn’t really have to make a pitch,” Trubisky said on zoom, “this is where I wanted to be. I wanted to play for coach Tomlin, being part of the rich Pittsburgh Steelers history.”

Trubisky also had a message for the fans, “Steelers Nation, I hope you guys know how excited I am to be here. I can’t wait to meet you guys and and play on Sundays.”

Trubisky and his wife Hillary are expecting their first child, a boy, in May. He says the baby will be born in Pittsburgh.

“I’m just excited to play for a city like this,” he said.
