Truck catches fire after crash with school bus carrying 20 children in Allegheny Township

ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP, Pa. — A truck caught fire after it was involved in a crash with a school bus in Allegheny Township Thursday.

Westmoreland County 911 said the crash happened near Hyde Park Road and Route 56 at 8:34 a.m.

Our crew at the scene learned that a pickup truck ran a red light and hit the bus before catching on fire. Another pickup truck was also hit during the crash.

Officials told Channel 11 that 20 children were on the bus at the time of the crash. No one involved in the crash was injured.

Police say the bus that was traveling north on Hyde Park Road was broadsided by a pickup truck that had run a red light.

The bus then hit another truck because of the crash.

“The vehicle, the Dodge truck that impacted into the bus did catch on fire and was fully engulfed by the time we got there,” said Allegheny Township Police Chief Dan Uncapher.

As soon as that crash happened, two employees who work here at the Auto Zone in the same intersection sprang into action. They couldn’t go on camera but they tell Channel 11′s Andrew Havranek they helped those 20 students get off that school bus.

One of the students, a second-grader, helped get the emergency door open and led classmates to safety.

“They learn young now because we just never know what’s going to happen,” Uncapher said. “The students are instructed from my understanding where the safety exits are in case something like this would happen.”

Police say all 20 students, the bus driver, and the drivers of the two trucks involved were checked by EMS. No one had serious injuries.

“We are very fortunate,” Uncapher said. “In any situation like this, life is of the utmost importance.”

Police say charges could be filed based on the investigation.

“That’s putting the cart before the horse,” Uncapher added. “The investigation is not done.”
