PITTSBURGH — Despite the move trends towards online shopping, South Hills Village is gearing up for what officials say will be another strong Black Friday, with crowds returning and spending expected to rise.
“We’re seeing full parking lots and that’s usually a really good sign of what Black Friday is going to bring,” said Shema Krinsky, the mall’s marketing director. “They’re projecting sales to be up 3.5 percent.”
For many shoppers, the day is about more than discounts.
For Rob Glass Black Friday is more of a cherished tradition with his 10-year-old granddaughter, Gianna.
“My granddaughter’s 10 years old, so for the last three years, she and I really look forward to coming spend Papa’s social security money,” Glass said with a laugh.
Gianna said the early wake-up call is worth it. “When you’re this excited, it’s not that tough. It’s exciting,” she said.
Excited for the shopping, and time with family.
“Oh my goodness, I’m so excited. I always am just so excited to spend time with him whenever I get to, ”said Gianna. “He loves to play. He is so kind and sweet. I mean, he’s just the best.”
For Glass, that time is also precious, especially with family living in different states.
“Getting older, kids are getting older, they’re not gonna want us. So you gotta take advantage of the times that you have with them,” he said.
