Penguins receive Jeff Petry and Ryan Poehling for Mike Matheson and 2023 fourth-round draft pick

PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Penguins have acquired a defenseman and a forward from the Montreal Canadiens in exchange for defenseman Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round draft pick.

Jeff Petry will join the Penguins’ defense and Ryan Poehling will play as a forward.

This is the second trade that the Penguins have made over the course of the day.

34-year-old Petry has played in the NHL for 12 seasons. He is currently signed to play until the end of the 2024-25 season with an annual value of $6.25 million. Petry led the Canadiens defensemen with six goals and 27 points in 68 games in the 2021-22 season. He has scored 87 goals over the course of his career and made 235 assists.

Petry has played for the U.S. in three World Championships. He was a member of the team that won a bronze medal in 2013.

Poehling is newer to the league, playing parts of three NHL seasons. The 23-year-old forward recorded nine goals, eight assists and 17 in 57 games last season.

Before joining the NHL, Poehling played for St. Cloud University where he scored 29 goals, 46 assists and 75 points over the course of 107 games.
