Daycare collapses in Pitcairn, officials still unsure about cause

PITCAIRN, Pa. — A daycare collapsed in Pitcairn over the weekend.

According to Allegheny County 911, units were called to Center Avenue and 2nd Street at 9:38 a.m. Sunday.

The Pitcairn Police Department said the fire department was called to a structure collapse.

Our crew at the scene spoke to a witness who said they saw the daycare explode early Sunday morning. He said he heard one explosion, looked outside his window and saw a second explosion.

Pitcairn Police later released a statement, clarifying that there was not an explosion.

Dispatch told Channel 11 that no one was hurt in the incident.

Police advised the public to avoid using Center Avenue from Broadway Boulevard and 2nd Street at the time.

There are still questions about what exactly led up to the collapse.

The fire marshal told Channel 11, that he went into the daycare after its sale. Inside, he says, he saw mold, mildew, rust, and stress cracks, which indicated that there were structural deficiencies in the roof.

Pitcairn’s code enforcement officer said there aren’t any recent code violations.

Plus, when we looked up state inspection reports, there wasn’t anything indicating a structural concern.

There are also two other daycare locations in Monroeville and Wilmerding. The children from the Pitcairn location went to one of those locations on Monday.
